What is a fiddlehead?

The fiddlehead fern has flourished for more than 3 million years making it one of the most ancient plants. Delicately indestructible, the fiddlehead fern is a mathematical marvel in nature. Spiraling outward, each whorl is wider than the one preceding it. The larger spirals are expanded versions of the smaller spirals within. The Swiss mathematician Jakob Bernoulli (1645-1705) refers to the spiral as the spira mirabilis or wonderful spiral. The Fiddlehead fern shows harmony and structure in nature. It is harvested in Maine and in the springtime is a tender crisp tasting culinary treat!
